Bas Rutten is a retired Dutch mixed martial artist (MMA) and kickboxer. He was the UFC Heavyweight Champion, a three time King of Pancrase, and finished his career on a 22 fight unbeaten streak (21 wins, 1 draw). One of his favorite tactics was the liver shot, which he popularized its use in MMA.

When he's not hosting Inside MMA, pushing papers in the IFL's front-office, training up coming MMA fighters, or throwing pepper in people's eyes, the tireless Bas Rutten regularly posts messages in the forum section of his official website, basrutten.tv.

The ".44 Caliber Killer"

David Berkowitz, better known as Son of Sam, is an infamous 1970s New York City serial killer who killed six people and wounded several others. His crimes became legendary because of the bazarre content in the letters that he wrote to the police and the media and his reasons for commiting the attacks. With the police feeling the pressure to catch the killer, "Operation Omega" was formed, which was comprised of over 200 detectives – all working on finding the Son of Sam before he killed again.


Berkowitz was eventually caught after receiving a parking ticket at the time and near the place of his last murder. That evidence along with letters he wrote, his military background, his appearance, and an arson incident, led police to his door. When he was arrested he immediately surrendered to police and identified himself as Sam.

And what America saw was a paunchy, moon-faced, nerdy-looking man of 24 who had methodically shot 13 people in a reign of terror that set off the greatest manhunt in New York City history.




Inside Berkowitz's battered car they found a Charter Arms Bulldog .44-caliber weapon and a fully loaded semiautomatic rifle, simulated to look like a submachine gun, along with a letter he planned to send to Suffolk police. Sam had already picked out his next target — the Hamptons.

The Polish Military has been involved in 63 wars between 972 and 1939. Recent peacekeeping operations involve over 4500 troops deployed internationally including Iraq and Afghanistan. Poland’s Special Ops Unit known as GROM operates in highly proficient and cohesive four-person teams. Women are also present in GROM, but due to security reasons, their functions are unknown (although it is believed they are routinely involved in intelligence gathering and stakeouts). All members of a team are fully trained as combat assault personnel. Weapons include the HK MP-5 9mm submachine gun family and the indigenous Tantal 5.45mm assault rifle (a Polish-produced AKS-74U) as well as the newer Beryl .223 assault rifle. Personal sidearm selection is left up to the individual. Snipers are equipped with either the HK PSG-1 or Mauser 86 7.62mm rifles. In some cases the RPG-76 Komar grenade launcher is carried. GROM has been operating quietly with US forces in the war against terrorism. Commandos from GROM were sent to Afghanistan to aid in the search for Taliban and terrorist soldiers.

I remember the Iron Sheik as the ultimate heel back when the WWF dominated American households as American Idol does today. What a villain. What a stooge. He feared nothing and no one and filled Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac Michigan with 93,000 people as the only sports event to sell out in this country at that time. Now, a mere 25 years later (and several rehabs and relapses) we reminisce on how it really was in the ring. And how to make you humble, the old country way.
